For years gravitypope customers and gravitypope staff have been huge fans of Cydwoqs outstanding designs and amazing craftsmanship. So needless to say we are extremely excited to present a one night only meeting with Cydwoq designer and founder, Rafi Balouzian!

Based in Burbank California, Rafi will be at gravitypope Vancouver (2205 west 4th ave) November 20 from 6 to 7 pm for an exclusive presentation of the Cydwoq Spring 2011 collection

Rafi Balouzian comes from a long line of master shoe-makers. In the early 1900s, his great-grandfather earned the reputation as a true artisan, crafting custom-made shoes to discriminating customers in Armenia. Years later, he established a factory manufacturing boots for markets throughout the Middle East. Rafi’s father, Hrair Balouzian, spent his teenage years at this factory immersing himself in every facet of shoe-making.

The Cydwoq factory was started in Burbank, California in 1996. The mission then, as now, was to create hand-crafted shoes using the best biological leathers and glues that provided the ultimate walking comfort in unique and timeless designs.

Join us Saturday 6 to 7 pm for some drinks and an amazing opprotunity to meet Rafi and preview the Spring 2011 collection. In addition, we will be offering an exclusive 15% discount off of our current Cydwoq 2010 collections and the opprotunity to pre order spring styles! Vans Vault Fall 2010 Collaborations: Filson/Pendleton

There's a lot of hype surrounding the upcoming Fall 2010 collaborations coming out of the Vans Vault collections, soon to arrive at Gravitypope. Our friends at Vans have sent us a few samples to get us excited before our full shipments arrive, an enthusiasm well worth sharing with our Gravitypope sneaker lovers.

Out of the Pacific Northwest, American heritage outfitter Filson offers an Era made from their trademark canvas and bridle leather. Paired with a sturdy matching Filson rucksack and a Sk8-Hi version (unfortunately not pictured), you "might as well have the best", as they say over at Filson.

Another heritage classic, Pendleton's Vans Vault collection worked with artist Taka Hayashi to create a Sk8-Hi that blends the brand's trademark Native American inspired patterns with Van's iconic skate shoe. Keep an eye out for a classic slip-on also to hit Gravity Pope's shelves soon...

I can't think of the last time that we were this excited to carry a brand, and I'm certainly not exaggerating. Season after season our staff has been pestering Gravity Pope's buyers to pick up Marc Hare's eponymous line, and now our wishes have finally been granted. For all you sartorial-minded individuals, if you don't know about Mr. Hare and the "shoes you can attach some romance to", then you can enlighten yourselves now. This wholly independent line is now being carried by our wholly independent boutiques, an exclusive to the North American continent!

This season's collection, entitled Miss Your Air, is inspired by the city of Paris. In the words of Mr. Hare, "Paris had an air and it was graceful." Handmade in Tuscany by master Italian craftsmen on Mr.Hare's exclusive British lasts, the materials are only of the finest. 50 Years of Dr. Martens

The history of Dr. Martens runs hand in hand with its rich iconographic status: the Doc Martens boot is a distinctive part of aesthetic movements that represent many groups of people and periods in time. In celebration of Dr. Martens 50th anniversary, a hip campaign has been launched synthesizing this history through the eyes of young and emerging artists, musicians, and directors. Ten bands were asked to record their versions of cult classic tracks that represent the spirit of Dr. Martens over the past five decades. Fully documented over YouTube, Dr. Martens shows that even after 50 years, the brand can stay current without losing its classic styling.

It's really quite fitting that Dr. Martens chose to use such visually stunning videos to celebrate this iconography. Here's Britain's The Noisette's rocking some Docs with a cover of the Buzzcock's Ever Fallen in Love:

Belgian designer Bernhard Willhelm's collaboration with Camper Together had a lot of people in the office wondering just how these funky sandals would look on a foot. The designer's signature designs have interpreted recycled and eco-friendly materials into wearable art.

Mr. Hare spring 2010

Gentlemen, we have very important footwear news - gravitypope is proud to add Mr. Hare to our list of brands. We have been drooling over these impeccably designed men's shoes since the AW09 collection launched and the SS10 collection 'Hot Steppers' confirmed this is a brand we MUST have.

Mr. Hare, the person, had an impressive career in PR, as a design consultant with Karrimore, was a marketing consultant for a long list of footwear and sport brands plus he opened 2 successful shops in London before starting Mr. Hare the brand - a brand that took 360 days from conception to fruition after a visit to a roadside tapas bar in Spain. Mr. Hare designs his shoes wherever he chooses. Currently handmade in Empoli (Tuscany, Italy), Mr. Hare will be made wherever the greatest manufacturer best suited to the task at hand is located.

For SS10 'Hot Steppers' is a dedication to a selection of Dancehall generals who through their sheer brilliance have given us reason to tear up the dance floors across all continents. Above the thrill of music that moves your physical and emotional state, there is only love in Mr. Hares humble opinion. For SS10, the major emphasis is on the materials. Mr. Hare wanted to create something with the presence of the AW09 'Purest Form' Collection, but with a much greater depth of character. The heart of the collection is made of Vachetta, a vegetable tanned leather that isn't produced in such an environmentally damaging way and the leather retains more of it's natural characteristics. These shoes must be polished regularly with natural bees wax polish and in return they will age and grow with you forming a unique patina and colouring that is distinct and unique. The more love you give them; the more reason they will give you to love them back.

For Fall 09, gravitypope picked up some great men's styles from Bensimon. Traditionally this sneaker was constructed of canvas, but the suede tennis mids and tennis lacet are a great addition to the collection and any men's wardrobe. Fantastic in the Anthracite colour way, the maroon is equally interesting with the classic Bensimon toe cap in black, also seen on the new 2 eye lace up as well.

This long established French company started out just after WWII importing second hand clothes into France. Dr. Martens has been doing some great collaborations as of late. Previously we have featured the Raf Simons collaboration of the 1461 in a patent white and navy for men. For this season, we had to get the exclusive on the Louise Body collaboration (wren 14 eye boot) featuring a beautiful detail seen on her 'birdies' and 'lacey birdies' wallprints. For those of you familiar with our gravitypope Tailored Goods location in Edmonton, the 'birdie' wallprint adorns our walls and blends seamlessly with the vintage fixtures we have been collecting. Another great style that we have received for fall came from the collaboration of Opening Ceremony and Dr. Martens. Sorry for the lack of posts this past week. We have been busy moving and setting up a temporary location of our Whyte Avenue storefront in Edmonton as we are getting ready for an amazing renovation. Our temporary space is right beside the original location on Whyte avenue and up stairs in the Baalim block at 10444 82 Ave, 780439.1637.

This is the original gravitypope location and since we are turning 19 this July we wanted to make sure all is in place for some great events leading up to the big 2-0 in 2010.
